A woman said this statement on the A&E Television Network reality series, “Intervention.” The show deals with people that are addicted and follows their lives through an intervention with their families and friends. In each episode the addict believes they are in a documentary about addiction and are not aware of the intervention that will take place. The show depicts the addict’s life as it is, filled with suffering and unaware choices that continually lead to misery.

As Toltecs, we know we actually create our own hell or emotional suffering. This is what addicts do. They are continually looking to make themselves happy with this or that so they can rest in the fact, although short-lived, that they are ok, safe, good and worthy people.

We are all unaware and confused when we take actions based on our happiness outside of ourselves and we think we must gamble, have it, drink it, eat it, snort it, shoot it, smoke it, have sex with it, buy it, or what ever your “it” is.

The addict does not want to create Hell in his life. No one does. He is doing the best he can with the knowledge he has at the present moment. With that said, he continues to make choices that create suffering. We think we know better, after a divorce, an arrest or another so-called bad experience. We say, “Oh I get it now, I see what I am doing and I do not want to create Hell in my life anymore.” But a month, a week, or an hour later we again take action that creates suffering in our lives.

At the end of the episode, the intervention takes place and the addict has to be convinced to be placed into rehab by their family and friends. The show ends and it does not show the intense work of rehab.

In the Toltec tradition there is a time that comes when you say “No Mas!” or “No More.” With this tiny bit of awareness, the addict realizes he wants to create different results. Although realizing that we create emotional suffering in our own lives is only the first part. The second part is taking repeated action to create your dream of heaven.

The Toltec tradition is filled with actions to point you in the direction of heaven on earth, but they are only pointers. You must take action if you want to change. This powerful statement says it all when it comes to creating a life free from addiction, “If you want something you’ve never had, you have to do something you’ve never done.” Remove all the beliefs that keep you from living your Dream of Heaven and take action!
